About the Course

Online 4-Hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) Course

This online course serves as the first step for new drivers in Florida to earn the privilege of obtaining a driver’s license. Since January 1990, the Florida Legislature, through F.S. 322.095, has required all first-time drivers to complete and pass the 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course.

The South Florida Safety Program offers two convenient online programs at www.mynewlicense.com: the mandatory TLSAE course and the optional Online Permit Exam for first-time drivers under 18 years of age, as required by the Department of Safety and Motor Vehicles (DMV).

What is the TLSAE?

The TLSAE course is mandatory for all first-time drivers who have never held a license in Florida or any other state. The 4-hour course is divided into three sections:

• The impact of drugs on the body

• The effects of drugs on driving abilities

• Responsible driving behaviors and Florida state laws

Passing the TLSAE

At the end of the TLSAE course, participants must complete a final exam and achieve a passing score of 80% in order to have their results submitted to the DMV.

What is the Online Permit Exam?

The Online Permit Exam is an optional but beneficial resource for first-time drivers under 18. Offered by third-party administrators like the South Florida Safety Program, passing this exam ensures results are reported directly to the DMV. After completing both the TLSAE and the Online Permit Exam, students can visit their nearest DMV office with a valid photo ID and required personal information to receive their learner’s permit on the spot.

Benefits of Combining the TLSAE and Online Permit Exam:

Completing the TLSAE course prepares students with essential knowledge about safe driving practices, the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving, and the responsibilities of being a driver. This comprehensive program highlights the consequences of impaired driving and provides a detailed overview of Florida’s safety laws designed to prevent accidents. Additionally, the course equips participants with the foundational knowledge required to successfully pass the Permit Exam.

For optimal preparation, students are encouraged to download the Florida Driver Handbook.
